Mary Gregory blue glass perfume decanter

A beautiful aqua blue this perfume decanter stands 18cm or around 8 inches tall.   The stopper looks slightly darker in the image but it fits perfectly with matching numbers to the stopper and base.   I think it is the thickness of the glass stopper compared to the decanter that makes the difference.    c. 1880 - 1900

Who was Mary Gregory?

Mary Gregory glass is easily recognised by its white enamelled decoration of Victorian era children or young adults.   The children are usually chasing butterflies, bowling hoops, or perhaps flying kites while the teenagers are often looking coy.

Most of the glass is believed to have been made in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) at a number of factories including the Hahn factory at Gablonz and Moser in Karlsbad.

Although the glass is called Mary Gregory glass and there was an American woman working in the Boston & Sandwich Glass company in the 1880s it would have been impossible for her to have painted all the early pieces of Mary Gregory glass. In fact there is some doubt that she painted any at all.

Mary Gregory style glass has been copied for many years and is still made today although it does not have the simple charm of the old pieces.
